Abstract

Andrés Bello, in 1827 (while he was in London) and in 1830 (when he was already in Santiago de Chile), edited brief and relevant texts by Benjamin Constant. These are, first, three fragments of the first chapter of Constant's Commentary on the Works of Filangieri, from 1822, edited and annotated by Bello in 1827, at the end of his stay in London, who transcribed it from a Spanish translation of 1825. Second, the almost complete first chapter of Constant's Principles of Politics, from 1815, which Bello 'edited' in 1830, once he arrived in Chile, by including it as part of the class material for his Course on Universal Legislation, which he began that year. Bello transcribed it from a Spanish translation of 1820. In the latter case, the original manuscript is lost, so an effort at palingenesis is necessary.
