The Cabildo of Santiago and the genesis of the limitation of political power in Chile, 1810-1811

Three unpublished documents are transcribed and commented on that establish the role of the Cabildo of Santiago in setting limits on the exercise of political power by the State. Once the first National Congress began to function, the municipal institution requested the opinion of Juan Antonio Ovalle and Manuel de Salas, among other jurisconsults, regarding the temporal extension of the mandate of their deputies, the possibility of removing them from their positions and of submitting them, once their work was completed, to the trial of residence. Traditional methodologies have been used in this type of transcription and the objective is to publicize such important documentary pieces.
