this paper examines the role played by legal doctrine and constitutional history throughout the extended period during which the Chilean Constitution of 1833 remained in force, based on a selection of works proposed by the constitutional historian Luis Galdames in 1925, the year a new constitution was promulgated. It advances the hypothesis that the preservation and subsequent reform of the 1833 Constitution were largely the result of the efforts of a group of scholars dedicated to both fields. Accordingly, the article analyzes the defining characteristics of the selected works, traces patterns of continuity and change among them, explores the ways in which they interpret the Constitution, and highlights certain institutions and legal provisions they examine and describe, with particular attention to those later repealed and/or amended in 1925.
